16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence: “Orange the world: End violence against women now!” Is “Incivility” Violence Against Women?

When we advocate for an end to violence against women we frequently focus on the more extreme forms, but increasingly workers around the world have begun to look at the psychosocial forms of discrimination, and most in the workplace. The focus has turned to looking at the effects of “bullying”, “incivility”, and most recently “selective incivility”. These behaviours are no less serious in their consequences, not only for women, but, as the work on “selective incivility” is increasingly suggesting may have particular significance in patriarchal
cultures.
For this year’s 16 Days of Activism, we want to briefly unpack the significance of “bullying”, “incivility” and “selective incivility” for their relationship to the overall problems of VAW.
