Do Elections have to be Battlegrounds over Women’s Bodies?

Elections in Zimbabwe have high probability of becoming violent, and women, in particular, become both direct and indirect victims of the Organised Violence and Torture (OVT) that takes place. Whilst not every election has been violent, some (2005, 2013, and 2018) are less violent, but others have been extremely violent: 2000, 2002, and 2008 were exceptionally violent. OVT becomes a potential source of concern in Zimbabwe because of the deeply polarised nature of Zimbabwean politics: Zimbabwe is the most politically polarised country out of 34 African countries surveyed by the Afrobarometer.
