Towards Youth resilience policy framing

This year Zimbabwe celebrates Youth Day on the 21st February under the theme “Positioning youth empowerment and development towards vision 2030.” While the theme promises to empower youth, past celebrations reveal that they remain stuck in the reality of harsh socioeconomic conditions which impede their progress. The national youth day is celebrated in honour of the late Zimbabwean president Robert Gabriel Mugabe. This commemoration seeks to enhance youths’ employment opportunities, agency, and participation among other empowerment skills. Youths in Zimbabwe are often excluded from national processes and are adversely affected by unemployment, educational inequality, substance abuse, depression, child marriages, violence, mental health challenges and financial literacy among other social ills. The policy response has been at best tokenistic and largely informed by politics and not necessarily by the challenges that youth contend with.
